13th. A powerful documentary about law, order and incarceration. Q&a with director Ava dUvERNAY AND oPRAH wINFREY.

On Sunday, November 13th, Hollywood Spotlight Now was invited to a special screening of the documetary,13TH. The film, directed and produced by Ava DuVernay (12 Years a Slave) focuses on a little known line in the 13th Amendment of the U.S.Constitution, which although it abolishes slavery, leaves a large loop-hole allowing citizens who are incarcerated to be required to work for free (i.e. as slaves). Among many issues, the film looks at how incarceration has been used as a tool to control minorities in the United States. How African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to be arrested and sentenced for serious crimes than whites. How promises of "Law and Order" are actually code for discrimination against minorities. After the screening, director DuVernay and media icon Oprah Winfrey took to the stage to discuss the inspiration for the film and their reactions to the recent US Presidential election, among other things. 13th is available on Netfilx. Here's the trailer for the film and the Q&A interview with DuVernay and Winfrey.
