Politics Dominates WOmen's Speeches at Golden GLobes Ceremonies

Picture
Amidst all the accolades, the women who won at the 77th Annual Golden Globes Awards Sunday night had politics on their mind and used the stage as a bully pulpit to promote a variety of causes including LGBTQ rights and abortion rights.

Patricia Arquette kicked it off during her speech accepting the Best Supporting Actress in a limited series or made-for-TV movie (The Act.) Arquette indicated that on a night when Hollywood was celebrating, the history books would record "a country on the brink of war, The United States of America.  A president tweeting out a threat of 52 bombs, including cultural sites. Young people risking their lives to travel across the world. People not knowing if a bomb was gonna drop on their kids' heads. And the continent of Australia on fire. So, while I love my kids so much, I beg of us all to give them a better world. For our kids and their kids, we have to vote in 2020, and we have to plead and beg for everyone we know to vote in 2020. "

Michelle Williams spoke about a woman's right to choose during her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a limited series of made-for-TV Movie (Fosse/Verdon). In talking about career and life choices she's made along the way, the actress revealed "I would not have been able to do this without employing a woman's right to choose."  The actress receive applause for that statement and even more when she encouraged women to show up at the polls saying, "So women, 18-118, when it's time to vote, please do so in your own self-interest. It's what men have been doing for years... which is why the world looks so much like them. Don't forget, we are the largest voting body in this country. Let's make it look more like us."

During her speech presenting Ellen DeGeneres with the Carol Burnett Award for Excellence in Television, actress and comedian Kate McKinnon thanked the talk-show host or her contribution to LGBTQ rights. In a moving tribute the SNL star told DeGeneres " In 1997 when Ellen's sitcom was a the height of its popularity, I was in my mother's basement lifting weights in front of the mirror and thinking 'Am I gay?' And I was. And I still am. But that's a very scary thing to suddenly know about yourself . It's sort of like doing 23andMe and discovering you have alien DNA. And the only thing that made it less scary was seeing Ellen on TV. She risked her entire life and her entire career in order to tell the truth, and she suffered greatly for it.  Of course, attitudes change but only because brave people like Ellen jump into the fire to make them change. And if I hadn’t seen her on TV, I would’ve thought, ‘I can never be on TV, they don’t let LGBTQ people on TV,’ and more than that, I would’ve gone on thinking that I was an alien and that I maybe didn’t even have a right to be here, so thank you, Ellen, for giving me a shot.”

The men were not entirely silent on the political front. Actor Russell Crowe, who won Best Actor in a mini-series or Television FIlm for The Loudest Voice, declined to attend the awards, sending a message he was home in Australia protecting his home and family from the wild fires there.  Actor Joaquin Phoenix, who picked the Best Actor Award for his role in "Joker" thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for proving a plant-based meal for the event and admonished other awards shows to do the same.  Phoenix rambled during his  somewhat profanity laced speech that required NBC producers to take advantage of the six-second delay mode before hitting the main point. "Contrary to popular belief, I don't want to rock the boat, but the boat (bleep)," he added. "It's really nice that so many people have come up and sent their well wishes to Australia, but we have to do more than that, right? …  It's great to vote, but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives and hope that we can do that. We don't have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards sometimes or back, please."
