Mamma Mia!  Here we go again!   And again!

Picture
The gang is all back and ready to have a good time in Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again. It’s 10 years later and Meryl Streep’s indomitable “Donna” has passed on, but she’s there in spirit.  Her daughter, Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried, has rebuilt the hotel where she grew up and is throwing a big party, where mom’s best friends and her three dads (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skaarsgard) are on the guest list.  Sophie and Sky (Dominic Cooper) are still together after all this time and they've been learning the hotel business themselves, which is one reason Sophie wants the re-launch of the Hotel Bella Donna to be such a success.

Since her mother's death, she's been relying on the reliable, but mysterious Senior Cienfuegos, played by Andy Garcia. He's as enamored with Sophie as any of the men who claim to be her father and it adds a nice, sentimental touch to the film and some more eye-candy for the 40+ crowd, which is sure to be a big part of the movie-going audience.

Sophie was brought up by a single mother and when she finds out she too is expecting, the story focuses on how Donna ended up on a small Greek Island at the end of the world.

Lily James plays the young Donna and her voice is incredible. This young actress who most Americans met on Downton Abbey has is a force of nature when it comes to acting, singing and dancing. She's backed up by her own set of "Dominoes"  Alexa Davies and Jessica Keenan Wynn as the younger Rose and Tanya, counterparts to the more mature Julie Walters and Christine Baranski.  And since the trailers give it away, it’s no surprise that Cher makes an appearance as Sophie’s grandmother.

A lot of critics have panned this somewhat over the top musical, but for me, it was a welcome vacation from all the special effects and efforts to save the world or universe, or whatever.  True, the script is pure cotton candy and it, and the dance numbers were built around Abba songs, from the 70s. Songs, that remain extremely catchy and popular even today.  It’s rare that I leave a movie feeling better than when I arrived, but the folks behind Mamma Mia decided we should give it a go again, and I’m so glad they did.

Bonus:  Sorry to Bother you

This small film could be a big awards season contender, IF the studios do the work and get people to SEE it.
